Is money a bad b-day gift for a new boyfriend?

We've been together for just 3 months (4 when his b-day approaches). I asked him what he wanted and he said he just wants me (awww). But I want to give him something. I was thinking a card with $100 so he can buy something for himself. Is that too much?? Any ideas??
