What's the feasibility of long trips by jet ski?

I've traveled the US by motorcycle. And while doing so I had the idea of traveling around the entire coast of South America by jet ski. Would it be like an aquatic motorcycle trip? Can it be done? Has anyone ever tried it? How about crossing from the West Coast of the US to Hawaii?
