Sleeping bag for college visit?

I'm a senior at a NYC high school and I'll be visiting colleges and staying overnight during spring break. I was advised to bring a sleeping bag. It will be April in upstate New York and I will be indoors. What type should I bring? Any suggestions? Where can I purchase at a store (not online)? Thanks.
