Can the average person fix a problem on the latest years of the Ford Escape?

I'm thinking of buying a 2007 or 2008 model Ford Escape. Can the average person change the water pump, thermostat, alternator, starter, or brakes on these newer cars? I've fixed these things myself on my 1998 Rodeo and want to be able to do the same with the Ford Escape.
