What does "Blind Emboss" mean?

When someone says that there going to "blind emboss" something in a book, what does that mean precisely? Does it mean that its litterly imprinted in to the book (so it won't disappear)? Or is it similar to when something is embossed with gold coloring (like a title), and after time it dissipates?
