Rear rim won't come off of the hub?

have a 1991 toyota 4-runner with a flat tire. Problem is the rim wont pop off the hub. I've tried tapping around the outside of the rim near the lug nut holes with a ball peen hammer ( away from the tire rim edge) but that has no effect. If someone's come across this before, what was your solution? I'm out of ideas.
